Fresh Herbs

Might seem like an expensive luxury item, but these are usually around £1.50 for a pot somewhere in the fresh veg/salad aisle of the supermarket. This is not much different to a small jar of the dried stuff in most supermarkets.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden Chives and Thyme will pretty much survive neglected outside all year round, provided nobody uses it as an ashtray. Others are better as a windowsill plant and will need occasional watering, but can make a multipurpose ornament.

Basic Rules
This is a really quick overview.

  • If leaves start to go yellow - the plant needs more sunlight.
  • If leaves start to go floppy - the plant needs more water.
  • Dead leaves, and stem can be removed without killing the plant as long as you don't remove all the leaves!!
  • Avoid putting water directly on the leaves, especially in direct sunlight.
  • Soil in the top of the pot should be moist not swimming, and not dusty dry.
